Conductor: Patrick Bailey
Soloist: Katherine Gregory
Programme
Barber – Knoxville: Summer of 1915
Butterworth – A Shropshire Lad
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No.4
Fresh from their recent sell-out ‘Cornish Proms’ concerts at the Eats & Beats Festival, Newquay, Symfoni Kernow play well-loved classics in a charity fundraising concert for Bodmin Keep-Cornwall’s Army Museum.
Tchaikovsky’s symphony is one of the great romantic symphonies: brooding, passionate, triumphant. Opening with a dramatic fanfare played by the orchestra’s full brass section that the composer described as Fate itself, the strings and the winds will then sweep us through worlds of passing dreams and visions of happiness.
Katherine Gregory is an exceptional young singer who began singing as a chorister at Truro Cathedral at the age of 13. Having made her debut with the orchestra two years ago we are excited for her return. She is singing Samuel Barber’s touching and evocative Knoxville – a piece about childhood, soft summer nights, a distant world, half-remembered.

‘A Shropshire Lad’ by the English composer, George Butterworth, is a short, tranquil piece for orchestra inspired by A E Housman’s famous collection of poems. These poems were popular among soldiers in the First World War including Butterworth whose life was cut short in service to his country when he was killed at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. It is a fitting tribute to the dedicated charity of the concert, Bodmin Keep, a museum rich in heritage and whose collection stands as testament to our soldiers, their families and communities.
Join us for this high-quality evening of music, given by some of the county’s finest musicians.
